Thermal Imaging Surveys in Peterborough

Non-invasive thermographic inspections of distribution boards, plant rooms and industrial equipment — carried out live, under normal load, by an NICEIC Approved Contractor.

Most electrical failures announce themselves early. A termination working loose in a distribution board does not fail overnight — it runs warm for weeks, then hot, then hot enough to char insulation. By the time anyone smells it, you are already into unplanned downtime, or worse. A thermal camera sees that fault months before your nose does.

LS Elec carries out thermographic surveys of electrical installations across Peterborough — distribution boards, plant rooms, switchgear and fixed industrial equipment — from the industrial units around Fengate to the business parks fringing the parkways. We survey while your installation is working at normal load, because that is precisely when overloads, phase imbalances and loose connections reveal themselves.

We are electrical compliance specialists, not a camera-hire outfit. Every survey is planned, carried out and reported by people who inspect and certify electrical installations for a living — and who can price, carry out and verify the remedial work if we find something.

  • Distribution boards, plant rooms and switchgear surveyed under real load
  • No shutdown, no disruption — surveys run while you work
  • Loose terminations and overloads found before failure or fire
  • Insurance-grade reports with images, temperatures and clear priorities
  • NICEIC Approved Contractor covering Peterborough and surrounding towns
  • Fixed quotes, usually within the hour
01

Why heat is the earliest warning you will get

Almost every serious electrical fault begins as resistance, and resistance under load means heat. A loose termination, a corroded connection, an overloaded circuit, an unbalanced three-phase supply, a motor bearing on its way out — each one shows as a distinct thermal signature long before it shows as a tripped breaker, a stopped line or a fire investigation.

A visual inspection cannot see any of this. The connection looks fine, the panel looks fine, and the first physical evidence is often scorching — which is to say, evidence that arrives too late. Thermography moves that discovery forward by months, while the fix is still a scheduled hour with a screwdriver rather than an emergency.

02

No shutdown, no disruption — surveyed while you work

Thermal imaging is one of the few inspection methods that works best with everything switched on. We survey during normal operating hours, at normal load, without isolating supplies or interrupting production. Lines keep running, offices keep working, and in schools and care homes nobody loses power for a moment.

That makes it especially useful for premises where isolation is expensive or simply not an option: food-production and cold-storage sites, logistics operations, server and comms rooms, and any building where continuity of supply is part of the duty of care.

03

Reports written for insurers, not just engineers

Some insurers now ask for periodic thermographic surveys of electrical installations at higher-risk premises, and many look favourably on them. Our reports are built for that audience: paired thermal and visual images of every anomaly, measured temperatures, a severity grading for each finding, and a clear recommended action with a timeframe.

The same document works as maintenance evidence under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, which require electrical systems to be maintained so far as reasonably practicable to prevent danger. A dated, graded thermographic survey is a straightforward way to show you are looking, not guessing.

04

Pairs with your EICR for a complete picture

An EICR assesses the condition of your installation against BS 7671 — and much of that testing is necessarily done with circuits isolated. Thermal imaging is the complement: it watches the same installation doing its actual job at full load. Each method finds faults the other cannot.

For critical premises — care homes, schools, industrial sites, anywhere downtime or fire risk is unacceptable — we recommend running the two together or on alternating visits. And because LS Elec carries out remedial works as well as inspections, one contractor takes you from finding to fix to re-survey, with no gap in between for the problem to grow.

FAQ

Good questions we hear a lot

Do we need to shut anything down for the survey?

No — quite the opposite. Thermal imaging only tells the truth when the installation is working, so we survey with your equipment running at normal load. Production keeps moving and residents, pupils or staff notice nothing. The only access we need is to the boards and plant being surveyed.

How often should a thermographic survey be carried out?

There is no statutory interval, so it depends on the site. Many industrial and critical premises schedule one annually, and some insurers specify a frequency as a condition of cover. A sensible start is a single survey to see what the installation is doing under load — we then recommend an interval in the report based on what we find.

Can thermal imaging replace an EICR?

No, and anyone who suggests it is selling you a gap in your compliance. An EICR assesses condition against BS 7671, largely with circuits isolated; thermography watches the same installation at full load. Each finds faults the other cannot, which is why critical premises benefit from both.

What happens if you find a hot spot?

Every anomaly is photographed, measured and graded by severity in the report, with a recommended action and timeframe. Because we carry out remedial works ourselves, we can quote the fix straight away, complete it, and re-survey the connection under load to confirm it is running cool. Nothing gets left as a red box in a PDF.
